What About Dealing with Creative People?
So we agree on the need for collaboration, and yet some of you—I am sure—give pause at the notion of working with “those creative types.”
In the first Robert’s Rules of Innovation, one of the passages that got the most input from readers was the section in chapter V that discussed “the care and feeding of creatives.” Oh those creative types! The typical stereotype is of the deadline-resistant dreamer, forgetful, with a faraway, thousand-yard stare, impossible to deal with, the redheaded stepchild of your team. And then, voila, they thankfully—and profitably—come up with the solution to the problem that no one else on your innovation team could have solved.
Based on the response of some of you, collaboration with the so-called creatives is considered a necessary evil.
In this chapter, which addresses the philosophy of building and “pressure-testing” your innovation team, I pose this question to you:
If a person with an Einstein mind was available to you, would you hire that person?
Have you read the great biography of Albert Einstein by Walter Isaacson, Einstein: His Life and Universe? Einstein had great curiosity and imagination—he was incredibly creative. But he was quite unlike a practical thinker such as Benjamin Franklin. Isaacson’s characterization of the man is that of a “light-beam rider.” That is, rather than obsess about mathematical equations, he would actually visualize himself riding alongside a light wave.
